The owners are prominent Greensboro natives who desired a large formal house for frequent social events and a modern open interior that would also accommodate life in the twenty-first century. The program therefore consists primarily of two very large entertaining rooms (great room and kitchen-keeping) that both open onto a porch and from there onto a garden court. The resulting organizing concept or parti is a cross-shaped plan that consists of a 3-story central block flanked by two-story east and west wings.

The central block includes a north entrance, a circular stair at the crossing, and the kitchen-keeping room at the south. The east wing, with its large arched windows, contains the great room. The west wing includes a porte cochere and the garage. One enters through the edge of a garden set in front of the east wing and then through a stone loggia set int the side of the entrance wing.

In this parti, the tall center section breaks up the 127’ length of the façade into 3 complimentary parts that together construct an impressive balanced façade but also effectively separate public and service realms and allow the west wing to accommodate a porte cochere. Similarly, the central south wing separates the east garden court from the west motor court at the rear.

Principal exterior materials include Texas limestone walls with a mortar wash; cast-stone surrounds and copings; steel windows; Buckingham slate and lead-coated copper roofs; and custom chimney caps. Features include a recessed stone loggia; a silver-leaf cloister vault over the foyer; a custom LED laylight; custom plaster moldings; custom railings and roof cresting; travertine flooring; custom millwork and cabinetry; a 4-floor elevator; and high-CRI LED lighting.
