Mill Creek Residence

WINSTON-SALEM, NC

The owners were familiar with the firm’s work in the North Carolina mountains and approached Acanthus to design a rustic country house on 15 pastoral acres outside of Winston-Salem. The house is set into a steeply wooded hillside above a long meadow bordering Mill Creek.

Although the house is extensive, an intimate scale was achieved by breaking the large program into smaller volumes strung along the hillside. The approach climbs through the trees behind the house and circles down into a courtyard. The principal rooms and porches face south with views over a pool terrace and the meadow.

The exterior materials are cedar shakes, local granite, and Douglas Fir. The interior includes custom millwork and cabinetry, heart pine flooring, and a knotty pine library. There are seven masonry fireplaces, including three on the porches that are used in all seasons.
