House in Jackson Hole

At the base of Wyoming’s Teton Range, Acanthus nestled this 6,800-square-foot vacation retreat into a compact, steeply sloping site. Set back from the road against the southern edge of the property, the principal interior and exterior living spaces are arrayed along the length of the house to take advantage of dramatic mountain views to the north.

An entry at the lower level permits direct access to an adjacent ski trail. Separate sandstone terraces allow for outdoor entertaining and dining, while a deck and meditation garden offer more secluded outdoor environments for quiet contemplation.

Working within established community design restrictions, Acanthus opted for a rugged material palate consisting of locally sourced, fieldstone veneer and chinked timber siding with natural wane. Douglas fir logs were employed to frame the entries. Cedar shake roofs feature deeply projecting eaves supported by exposed timber rafter tails.

The owners’ primary living spaces are concentrated on the first floor. The front entry, kitchen, and dining room radiate in a fluid open plan from the grand living room that sits at the heart of the house. In contrast, the adjacent master suite is comprised of a series of discrete rooms including an intimate book-lined study with fireplace. Guests can be accommodated on the lower level or in a private apartment above the garage.

Selected interior walls and ceilings are clad with reclaimed barnwood siding. Acanthus collaborated with Trauner Designs and an array of regional artisans on the many pieces of unique built-in cabinetry and seating that animate the house.
